Meet our Catch of the Week: a clear nose skate gliding in like a little underwater pancake with wings 🥞🌊 These coastal rays are right at home in sandy and muddy shallows along the Atlantic, where they spend their days blending in and their nights hunting 🌙 Despite the name, that “clear” snout isn’t actually transparent—it’s just smoother and lighter than the rest of their speckled, sand-colored body, perfect for camouflage 🎨
Clear nose skates are bottom-feeding pros, snacking on small crustaceans, worms, and mollusks they find buried in the sediment 🦐🪱 They can live up to about 5–7 years and lay those iconic “mermaid’s purse” egg cases you might spot washed up on the beach 🧜‍♀️🥚 Look closely and you’ll notice their intricate patterning—tiny spots and shading that help them disappear into the seafloor like living, breathing camouflage art 👀✨
Today's Scientist Spotlight: Calvin 🌊🦦

This week, we’re otterly excited to shine the spotlight on a scientist making big waves, Calvin! When Calvin is at the helm with his positive energy and passion for teaching, we know our campers will have an absolute blast learning about marine life at the shore and under the waves.

Thank you for making every camp week a fun and unforgettable experience! 💙🐳

From teaching campers about animal anatomy and behavior to inspiring curiosity about the world beneath the waves, she helps every camp day make a splash!

Thank you for being such a fintastic part of the MSC team—we're so lucky to have you in our pod! 🐬🌊
Celebrating #SharkWeek 🦈 the JAWSOME way, but at marine science camp, it’s Shark Week every week. From dissections to shark tooth identification, we’ve been having a FIN-tastic, chomping good time learning what makes these animals so important!
Sharks aren’t something to fear, they’re something to be in jaw-e of. As key players in marine ecosystems, they help keep ocean food webs balanced and healthy in ways we’re still uncovering.
Here’s to the predators that keep our seas in check and inspire the next generation of ocean stewards. 🦈🩵
We’ve had an otterly 🦦amazing summer of seining, kayaking, and marine animal magic! There’s still time to join the fun, with spots open for camps through the end of August! Sign up today in the link in our bio!
What a great week of camp last week in Manahawkin! 🌊🦀

We want to give a special shoutout to two amazing local businesses who helped fuel our campers all week long. Thank you to @fusarospizzanj for their generous donation of pizzas, our campers were beyond excited (and well fed!). And a big thank you to @manahawkin_ritas serving all of our campers plenty of ice creams and many more smiles.

Also a huge thank you to our host, Stafford Township Recreation, for welcoming us and making this week possible.

We’re so grateful to be part of a community that supports marine science education and shows up for our campers. Thank you all! 🐚☀️
